Russian Sabotage Network Hits US Aviation—20 Agents Busted In Plot Unseen Since 9/11

DEATH ROW – Youtube

On July 20, 2024, a container full of parcels caught fire at Leipzig Airport in Germany. This happened right before the parcels were about to load onto a cargo plane heading to the United States. The fire was no accident, it kicked off a planned series of sabotage attacks tied to Russian intelligence. These attacks aimed to mess up flights across the Atlantic and showed big weaknesses in the world’s air travel systems.

The problems got worse fast. The very next day, on July 21, another fire started near Warsaw, Poland. Then, on July 22, one broke out at a facility in Birmingham, UK. Spy agencies figured out these were practice runs set up by Russia’s GRU, which is their military intelligence group. These attacks picked up after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Records show 12 such cases in 2023, jumping to 34 in 2024. The method was simple: hide small fire-starting devices in packages. This low-tech trick makes it hard to prove who did it, so Russia can say they had nothing to do with it while still causing trouble for NATO countries.

The targets went beyond just airports. Attackers hit important systems like undersea internet cables in the Baltic Sea, train tracks in Poland, and water plants in Finland. Drones kept flying into Polish airspace without permission, making people worry about bigger chaos. In Finland, strangers broke into water facilities, raising fears of poisoning the supply, though experts are still checking if Russia was behind it. Overall, these moves create disorder in shipping, travel, and basic services. It’s one of Europe’s biggest security headaches since the Cold War days.

Hiring Everyday People for Dirty Work

Russia isn’t sending its own soldiers for these jobs. Instead, they hire a loose group of people through apps like Telegram, paying them cash to do the sabotage. These “gig workers” are often young folks from places like Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and other countries. Money drives them more than politics. Since 2022, police in Europe have caught or charged over 30 of them.

For the airport fires, four people got arrested, and officials are hunting two more around the world. Some of these hires even felt bad later and talked about it, showing cracks in the group. Russia also uses outside teams in spots like Bulgaria, which makes it tougher for investigators to follow the trail back home.

How the Cargo Sabotage Worked

The fires in Leipzig, Warsaw, and Birmingham all happened at DHL centers. These are major spots for shipping goods to the US and Canada. The bad guys hid the fire devices inside regular packages. They set timers so the flames would start while the plane was in the air, that would cause huge problems.

Experts called the possible damage “catastrophic.” It led air safety officials to change how they check cargo. At Leipzig, work stopped for a long time, which slowed down deliveries everywhere. This plot shows how planes and shipping are now top targets in this kind of sneaky warfare.

How NATO and Europe Are Fighting Back

In January 2025, NATO started Operation Baltic Sentry to protect undersea cables and key systems. The European Union stepped up with better watching tools, shared spy info, and stronger defenses against online attacks. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the sabotage “unprecedented.” UK spies and others warn that Russia is ramping up, wearing down Europe’s ability to respond.

There have been over 50 attacks like this since 2022, and many don’t have clear blame yet. NATO thinks about striking back with cyber tricks first. As these incidents happen more often and spread wider, Europe faces a ongoing sneaky threat. It puts pressure on teamwork and basic systems. Without strong action, this hidden war could get worse, pushing airlines, shippers, and governments to change fast against a hard-to-catch enemy.
